A new project for Zaragoza. The city council is planning to design a major project to try to reclaim the banks of the river Huerva, a tributary of the Ebro, and create a large linear urban park around the river.

The development would be inspired by the style of the Turia Gardens in Valencia or Madrid Rio.

The project has a budget of almost 30 million euros and is scheduled for completion in 2027.

According to El Confidencial, the idea of the municipal corporation is to green the riverbed of a river that was partially buried just over a century ago. In 1924 it was decided to bury a stretch of more than a kilometre of the Huerva – approximately 20% of its course – in order to carry out the urban expansion of the Aragonese capital. This river segment is located under important roads in the city centre, such as the Gran Vía, the Paseo de la Constitución and the Paseo de la Mina.

Now, the project foresees the improvement of the neglected riverbanks that cross the centre of Zaragoza, by creating a promenade with new leisure facilities – which could include kiosks, children’s play areas, cycle paths and improved landscaping with trees and flowers.
